[UPDATE] Sony heeft in een statement aan IGN bevestigd dat PlayStation ook dit jaar niet aanwezig zal zijn op E3.
Dat komt doordat de visie van de beurs niet past bij de plannen van Sony. Sony wil namelijk meer inzetten op een wereldwijde strategie in 2020 en zal daarom wereldwijd kleinere evenementen organiseren.
“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year. We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

Ook de ESA (Entertainment Software Association) dat E3 ieder jaar organiseert, heeft ondertussen commentaar op de situatie gegeven. Al worden noch Sony of PlayStation daarin vermeld. In hun statement leggen ze de focus op de vele nieuwe “ervaringen” en partners die dit jaar naar E3 zullen komen.
“E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world. E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike. Exhibitor interest in our new activations is gaining the attention of brands that view E3 as a key opportunity to connect with video game fans worldwide.”

[ORIGINEEL BERICHT] Het is nog een klein half jaar tot E3 opnieuw helemaal losbarst, maar er is nu al mogelijk een domper op de feestvreugde. Want PlayStation zou, volgens industrie analist Michael Pachter opnieuw niet aanwezig zijn.
“As far as I know, they don’t plan to attend. I think that’s a huge mistake, as their ‘focus on the consumer’ is not inconsistent with their attendance at the premier industry trade show. I hope they change their minds, but am sceptical.”

En dat ondanks dat de release van de PlayStation 5 voor dit najaar op de planning staat.
De nieuwe console zou volgens Pachter eind februari aan het grote publiek voorgesteld worden.
Dat zei hij in een interview met Video Games Chronicle. In datzelfde artikel wordt er vermeld dat Microsoft wél aanwezig zal zijn om hun nieuwe Xbox uitgebreid voor te stellen.
